Other mother: (to Milo) Maybe some day you and Francesa can get together and talk about what it's like to have a younger brother or sister.
Francesca: My brother is annoying.
Milo: I make breakfast for Mira every morning and I make waffles and I get her yogurt.
Other mother: (looks at me like, what the hell is this kid talking about) Really?
Me: It's kind of a recent thing. He's started making them both breakfast. We're hoping it lasts.
Other mother: (now looking at me like I might possibly be insane) Oh.
Me: Anyway, we've got to go. It was nice to meet you. (I gather up the children and we start walking away.)
Milo: What was she talking about? I like having a sister.
And now my work is done. I'd like to take credit for it, but really a tremendous amount of the credit goes to Milo, who decided from day one that he was going to figure out a way to get along with a screeching, drooling bundle of baby.
The kids get along better right now than I'd ever imagined possible Sure, there are fights to break up, and frequently screams from Mira along the lines of "Don't grab it the camera don't grab it you grab it!!!!" which usually means she's trying to grab something from Milo, but then there have been the past three mornings where the kids have gone upstairs, by themselves, and Milo has prepared breakfast, gotten both himself and Mira fed, and CLEANED UP. This has made him immensely proud of himself, and has also had the strange effect of making him appreciate Mira more.
May it stay this way forever.

I read this while me 2 and a half year old is grabbing my leg begging to go wake up his little sister (9 months) so they can play and have a cuddle! He also love cooking breakfast for everyone - so far it has cost us a broken blender a few smashed plates and an egg or two squashed on the floor!! All worth it when you witness kids making the choice to show kindness and compassion toward others.
